John Iv Lascaris
John IV Doukas Laskaris was Emperor Byzantine of Nicaea from 1258 to 1261 , born 8 January 1250 , died 1305 , son of Theodore II , emperor of Nicaea, and Helen of Bulgaria (1223 1254).
There is still a minor when he ascended the throne of Nicaea, in August 1258, with the regent Muzalon George , former adviser to his father. If the aristocracy had to swear Muzalon, it was nevertheless murdered several days later at the funeral of Theodore II. A palace revolution confided the regency of the Empire of Nicaea in young general Michael Palaeologus (later Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus ).
The day of Christmas 1258 , John IV was crowned emperor at Nicaea at the same time that Michael Palaeologus (which was nevertheless crowned first, with his wife Theodora, marking its precedence over the young John IV).
15 August 1261 , Michael VIII was crowned Emperor in the Byzantine Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. A few months later, on his order, John IV had his eyes gouged out and no longer able to claim the throne, when he was only 11 years. He was soon relegated to a castle south of the Marmara Sea where he died in 1305 under the name of Brother Joseph.
Her sister Eudoxia Lascaris (1254 1311) continued his name in history by marrying Count Pierre Ventimiglia (1230 1278). His other sister, Mary Lascaris (1258), married Nicephorus I. Epirus.
