John Iii Doukas Vatatzes
John III Doukas Vatatzes, born in Didymotique in Thrace , in 1193 , and died on 3 or 17 November 1254 at Nymphaion Family Vatatzes John is the son of Basil Vatatzes (1150-1193) and a daughter of Isaac Angel, Angelina Angel (born circa 1160). His own father was an uncle of Isaac II and Alexius III Angel. He married in 1212 Lascarins Irene (+ August 1239), daughter of Theodore I Lascaris who chose for his successor because of its military value. He tried to reconstruct the Byzantine Empire , destroyed by the crusaders of the Fourth Crusade and fought to Poimanenon in 1224. He expanded his domain at the expense of the Venetians. He occupied Adrianople. Ally of the Bulgarians , he unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople in 1235. The Turks then threatened his kingdom, but he was saved by the invading Mongols who annihilated the Turkish power in 1244. He intervened against the despot of Epirus , took possession of Thessaloniki in 1246 and engaged in talks to try to recapture Constantinople. George Acropolita delivered his funeral oration. From his marriage with Irene Lascarins, he had a son, the future Theodore II Lascaris. Irene Lascarins yet preferred to leave in 1235 to enter orders as the sister Eugenie. He remarried in 1244 with Constance of Hohenstaufen (1230-1307) , daughter of Emperor Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor (1194-1250) and Bianca Lancia (1210-1234). Biography
