John I Hyrcanus
John Hyrcanus I. (reigned until his death in -134 -104 BC.) Hyrcanus said, is the second son of Simon Maccabeus and High Priest of the Temple of Jerusalem in the second century BC. AD. He is the nephew of Judas Maccabeus.
Two of the Hasmonean dynasty marked the son: I. Aristobulus and Antigonus I.
He is a member of the family of Hasmonean and holds the title of ethnarch, that is to say, the civilian head of a Jewish community, from 134 to 104 before the Common Era. Under his reign, Judea regains its independence and growing.
He conquered Shechem and destroyed around 108 BC. AD , the temple Samaritan on Mount Gerizim , and the Greek city of Samaria. He destroyed the city and tried to erase the last traces of the existence of a fortified city on the hill. "
