- The Voyage of John Cabot to America

Having persuaded the king that it was possible to go to the East Indies by the north-western America , it is to undertake an expedition for that purpose. His first attempt was a failure: Cabot does not go beyond the Iceland because of disputes with his crew.

On 2 May 1497 , the explorer left Bristol aboard the Matthew, a ship of 50 tons with a crew of 18 people including his son Sebastian Cabot. It made landfall on June 24 and explores the coast for some time before leaving for England. The precise location of its first berth is controversial, but the Canadian and British governments consider it arrived in Bonavista. In this case, he probably was the first European to set foot on the North American continent, but the lack of maps or travel journal raises questions about the veracity of the facts and Gaspar Corte- Real would be the first to discover the "new earth".

In the Cantino planisphere of 1502 (exhibit map which appears for the first time with a clear annotation, the most significant part of the eastern edge of the New World) arise represented as flags Portuguese, Greenland and Newfoundland. The map of Pedro Reinel , part dating from 1504 , shows clearly the dominance of Portuguese knowledge in reference to Newfoundland by his abundant names.

The following year, in May 1498 , Cabot resumes from Bristol for a new expedition and was lost at sea since that date, nothing appears on Cabot and references after all result from his son Sebastian.
