Biography

In 1524, Walter was responsible as Director of the Master of Torgau by Martin Luther to write the first book of polyphonic songs of the church Evangelical Lutheran. The following year he developed with Luther Rupsch and Conrad, the music of the Deutsche Messe, the German Lutheran church of the evangelical church. Many melodies accompanying the hymns were composed by Luther with his cooperation. The only songs accompanying texts of Luther that are listed under the proper name of Walter in the evangelical songbook ({Evangelisches Gesangbuch) are Es spricht der Mund wohl Unweisen (with text Herr, fr dein Wort sei hoch gepreist by David Denicke , EG 196) and Mitten wir im Leben sind mit dem Tod umfangen (EG 518), for which he has reworked an older edition in front of Salzburg. He is also the melodies Der Herr ist mein Hirt Faithfully (EG 274) and Morgen ist ganz frisch All neu und Herren of Gnad und groe Treu (EG 440), texts Herzlich tut mich erfreuen (EG 148) Allein auf Gottes Wort Will ich mein Grund bauen und Glauben (EG 195), along with the text and melody of Wach auf, wach auf, the deutsches Land (EG 145) .

At Torgau, there is a Johann-Walter-Gymnasium, spoke for the first time in 1371 and which has been given the name of the musician in 1995 . It was at this that Walter has trained the choirboys and is also where he was professor from 1534.

Mastering the Lutheran community of Kahla called Johann Walter Kantorei since 1956 .
