St. Joachim was the husband of Saint Anne and the father of the Virgin Mary , in the tradition of Catholic and Orthodox. He is awarded the title of the ancestor of God.

The canonical Gospels of the New Testament does not name the parents of Mary, but the story of Joachim and Anne appears in the apocryphal Gospel of Jacques. Joachim is described as a rich and pious man who regularly gives to the poor and the temple. However, his wife is barren, the High Priest rejects Joachim and his sacrifice, his wife's infertility has been interpreted as a sign of divine displeasure. Joachim withdrew later in the desert where he fasts and does penance for forty days. Of angels appearing to Joachim and Anne to promise them a child. Joachim returns to Jerusalem, Anne found it "hugs."

The stories concerning Joachim and Anne were included in the Golden Legend. They are represented in the Christian art even though the Council of Trent has limited representation of the apocryphal gospels.

In the West, the feast of St. Joachim, which was formerly celebrated on August 16 is generally observed with Saint Anne on July 26. In the East it is celebrated on September 9.
