Summary |
It is probably the "pretty boy" most ignored (and most overused) in Hollywood golden years ( 1950 - 1960 ).
In 1950 , when he was a graduate student in radio at the University of California , he was spotted by talent scouts and was offered a two-year contract by 20th Century Fox , which contract was extended until 1959. He made his debut in Hollywood in Fourteen Hours (Fourteen Hours), then held more important roles in Red Skies of Montana ( 1952 ) and King's Marin (Sailor of the King) in 1953.
He worked alongside John Wayne in one of the main roles of the western The Searchers (The Searchers), his first of three films directed by John Ford , the other two being The Last Band (The Last Hurrah) in 1958 and Sergeant Rutledge (Sergeant Rutledge) in 1960.
John Ford recommended Jeffrey Hunter to director Nicholas Ray in the role of Jesus in the Biblical film The King of Kings (King of Kings) in 1961 , his interpretation was given a lukewarm reception by critics. In The Longest Day (The Longest Day), he plays a soldier who lost his life by participating in the assault of the Allied troops facing the defenses of Omaha Beach.
After holding various supporting roles on television in the mid 1950's , Jeffrey Hunter signed a two-year contract with Warner Brothers. He played in the series Temple Houston , who knew no second season. He then accepted the role of the first episode of Star Trek , The Cage, where he played Captain Christopher Pike, captain of the ship Enterprise. Jeffrey Hunter turned down the proposal to turn the second pilot planned, leaving the command of the Enterprise to William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk) and preferred to turn to the cinema.
With the end of the contract system introduced by the major studios, Jeffrey Hunter had also, like many other celebrities, accepting roles in films of B series products in Europe , to Hong Kong or Mexico.
He has been married three times: Barbara Rush in 1950 , Joan Bartlett in 1957 , and Emily McLaughlin in 1969.
