Jean Skylitzes
Jean Skylitzes (in Byzantine Greek ) is a historian Byzantine of the eleventh century (c. 1040 - died in the early twelfth century ), originally from Asia Minor and who has held high office in Constantinople during the reign of " Alexius I Comnenus , the title of his book states that it is old and (in his time a judicial function), which functions after it was identified with Jean Thrakesios attested to last post 1092.
The name is sometimes given him Thraksios in Byzantine literature, including John Zonaras and George Kdrnos , the latter giving him the same as protovestiaros, it was not unlikely. This name can be explained by the geographical origin of the family Skylitzes, who was the subject of Thrakesion. Legal documents certifying that he was "drongaire of Sleep, so head to the courts of Constantinople in 1090 and 1092. It was also Eparch protoprodre and surely. He was elevated to the dignity of curopalate in 1093 (see Institutions of the Byzantine Empire ).
John is the author Skylitzes Synopsis Historiarum (Greek / Synopsis historin), a chronicle covering the period between 811 and 1057 (Amorian dynasties and Macedonian), and wants the continuation of the chronograph Theophanes the Confessor. This column is recognized as one of the best sources on the XI century. It was copied by George Kdrnos and widely used by John Zonaras and Michel Glyka.
Synopsis Some manuscripts include a continuation of the chronicle (Scylitzes Continuatus) until the year 1079 , attributed to the same author, but was discontinued after 1101 and borrowed heavily to Attaleiats Michel and Michel Psellus.
