Jean Pommier Essayist

Jean Pommier, born in Niort ( Deux-Sevres ) on 11 December 1893 and died in Nice ( Alpes-Maritimes ) on 13 February 1973 , Ecole Normale and Doctor of Letters, is a specialist in the history of literature.

Biography

Early years

He spent his undergraduate degree at Poitiers , before succeeding the entrance to the Ecole Normale Superieure , where he graduated in 1913, in the same class as Marcel Bataillon , hispanic famous.

Career

The war ended, he was admitted to the aggregation of letters in 1919 and then in 1946 he obtained a professorship of creative writing in History College de France , where he succeeded Paul Valry ) and taught until his retirement in 1964 (although still in 1968, he agreed to chair the newly created League of studies rnaniennes ).

In 1959, he succeeded Andr Siegfried at the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. As of January 9, 1960, he held the chair 35 of the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature in Belgium.

Work

After an initial thesis on Ernest Renan (Renan from unpublished documents, 1923), Jean Pommier interested in Charles Baudelaire (The Mystique of Baudelaire, 1932) to Alfred de Musset (Variety on Alfred de Musset and his theater, 1944 ), in Paul Valry (Paul Valry and creative writing, 1946), Chateaubriand and Proust. Besides these monographic studies, he published several books on general literature (questions of literary history and criticism, 1945; Craft Literature, 1955). Three years before his death, he recounts the memories of a life and an era in his show inside, 1970. He keeps an interest in Renan, and continues to publish studies on the first topic of study (The world of poetry and music of Ernest Renan, 1966).

Final years

Withdrawn at Menton , Jean Pommier devoted his retirement to the work of exegesis and research. He died at Nice as a result of a traffic accident, February 13, 1973.
