Jean Baptiste Jouvenet said the tall, born in Rouen at the end of April 1644 and died in Paris on 5 April 1717 , is a painter and decorator French.
Having begun his studies with his father Laurent Jouvenet , he moved to Paris in 1661 where he joined the studio of Le Brun who, believing many, associated with some important works commissioned by the King in integrating the team decorators royal residences: the castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye , the Hall of Tuileries , the palace of Versailles ( mural painting from the gallery of the new royal chapel in 1709) and the twelve apostles of the dome of the Cathedral of St. Louis des Invalides in 1704.
His early works are in the style of his master and Eustache Le Sueur. It is likely, with La Fosse , the most talented group of artists who contributed to the decoration of the Trianon and the Invalides , although it is now primarily known for his religious works.
During the quarrel of color , it sided with the colorists while retaining a certain firmness of line in his works.
Away from Classicism in his later career, his style incorporates the influence of the Baroque and a realistic treatment of details, eg up to watch the fishermen at work in Dieppe for its miraculous fishing in 1706.
Received in 1675 a member of the Academy of Painting , where he became director in 1705 and perpetual rector in 1707 , it can hardly, from the time sufficient for many works which he is charged and the King, more and more satisfied of his works, greatly increases the pension of 1200 pounds which he gratified a long time. But in 1713 , he has his right hand paralyzed following a stroke. Lamenting 'being deprived of work in a time that I'm just starting to know the difficulties of my art, "he managed to get enough skilled with your left hand to paint, this hand, several paintings whose Magnificat or pursued by the Innocence lies and seeking refuge in the arms of Justice and the ceiling of the Parliament of Rouen. Several of his works are exhibited at the Louvre , including the Resurrection of Lazarus, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen.
Her sister had married John I Restout , he is the uncle of John II Restout who was his pupil. He also trained Cayot , Collin de Vermont and Nattier.
