Jan Assmann, born on 7 July 1938 to Langelsheim , is an Egyptologist German.
Summary |
Jan Assman continued his studies in Lbeck and Heidelberg before turning in Munich, Heidelberg, Paris and Gttingen to the Egyptology , Classical Archaeology and Hellenic Studies. It is since 1976 professor of Egyptology in Heidelberg. He is also visiting professor in Paris (Collge de France, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, EHESS), Jerusalem (Hebrew University, Dormition Abbey) and the U.S. (Yale, Houston).
Archaeological
Since 1967, he directed excavations at Thebes (on graves official Saite period and the time of Ramses ). He is the author of numerous books and articles on religion, history, literature and art of Egypt. He has also published comparative studies on cultural theory (Das kulturelle Gedchtnis) and religion (Monotheismus und Kosmotheismus).
Jan Assmann is a member of the Academy of Heidelberg, the German Institute of Archaeology, the Historical Institute of Anthropology, the Exploration Society of Egypt and the French Society of Egyptology. He is also member of various expert committees, including those of the Institute for Cultural Studies in Essen, the Research Institute of the Protestant University Community and Cultural Studies Centre in Stuttgart.
