The Israeli Navy ( Hebrew : ) is the maritime branch of the IDF. It operates mainly in the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea.

Its main bases are Haifa , Atlit , Ashdod and Eilat.

On 14 May 1948, David Ben-Gurion announced the establishment of the IDF (Israeli army) and the Navy component Heyl Ha 'Yam. The navy has been for long years the poor relation of the Army, it was not until the Six Day War , and nonimation of Admiral Abraham Boster that its status changes.

The Yom Kippur War proved the Israeli naval superiority: IDF has neutralized the Syrian navy at the Battle of Latakia and Egypt during the battle of Damietta. After the war, a process rarmemnet is taking place, thanks to aquistion three submarines of Class Gal , and launching programs Sa'ar 4 and 4.5 and especially the study of the oceanic corvette Sa ' V ar.
