Israeli District
District (Hebrew: , plural: ) is an administrative subdivision of Israel.
The administrative organization of Israel is based on three levels of government:
- The central government
- Districts
- Municipalities
Israel has six districts headed by commissioners appointed by the Minister of Interior. They are divided into fifteen sub-districts (in Hebrew: nafot ; singular: NAFA), which are themselves divided into 50 natural regions.
List of Israeli administrative districts
- Jerusalem District (town: Nazareth ).
- Haifa District (capital: Haifa ).
- Middle District (capital: Ramla ).
- Tel Aviv District (capital: Tel Aviv ).
- Southern District (capital: Beer-Sheva ).
The West Bank and Gaza Strip are two districts that are not integrated in territories because Israel has not annexed.
Origin and role
The districts are a legacy of the Ottoman Empire and serve, among others, to develop local legislation to control taxes and local taxes, to vote on public works projects, to make grants to the local executive.
