Districts of Israel

District (Hebrew: , plural: ) is an administrative subdivision of Israel.

The administrative organization of Israel is based on three levels of government:

  • The central government
  • Districts
  • Municipalities

Israel has six districts headed by commissioners appointed by the Minister of Interior. They are divided into fifteen sub-districts (in Hebrew: nafot ; singular: NAFA), which are themselves divided into 50 natural regions.

List of Israeli administrative districts

  1. The portion east of the Armistice Line of 1949 (so-called green line) is considered not Israel by the UN, and Israel by the Jewish state.
  2. A portion of the district, the Golan Heights, annexed by Israel since 1981, but considered non-Israeli territory by the UN.

The West Bank and Gaza Strip are two districts that are not integrated in territories because Israel has not annexed.

Origin and role

The districts are a legacy of the Ottoman Empire and serve, among others, to develop local legislation to control taxes and local taxes, to vote on public works projects, to make grants to the local executive.
