Hagar and Ishmael in the desert, by Karel Dujardin

Ishmael (in Hebrew : God heard Biblical Context

Chapter XVI of Genesis recounts the birth of Ishmael . When Hagar became pregnant, Sarah gave him work hard and she fled before her. An envoy of God found her by a source and told him: "Go back to your mistress and humble yourself under her hand. I will multiply your descendants, so that we can no longer count . And he added: "Here you are pregnant, and nearly a son, and you give his name Ishmael, because God has heard your affliction. This will be a wild ass among men, his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand will be against him and he will stay in front of all his brethren . "

Ishmael was circumcised by his father at the age of 13. He grew up in the wilderness of Paran , which is in the Sinai. He became archer , and married a woman from the country of Egypt.

According to Genesis, Ishmael son is 12:

"These are the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bore to Abraham.

The names of the son of Ishmael, by their names, their generations Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

Mishma, Duma, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, and Naphish Kedma. These are the son of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their parks and enclosures. They were the twelve princes of their people . "

It also has a daughter, Mahalath, wife of Esau: '

"Esau was forty years old , took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. His wives did not please his father and his mother, he took her, besides the women he had Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth . "

Ishmael died at the age of one hundred thirty-seven years.

In Judaism and Christianity

The text of the Bible states that the descendants of Ishmael (the Ishmaelites) will form a great nation but that the Alliance will continue with Isaac , the son of Sarah .

Prophet of Islam

Muslims take Ishmael and Isaac, for two prophets of equal importance. There may be a disagreement as to the identity of the son that Abraham had to sacrifice to his God: most Muslims today argue that it is Ishmael, in fact in Genesis: God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah (according to these Muslims, it is Ishmael who was the propitiation, because according to biblical writings, God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son "unique" and Ishmael being elder, it would be the "only son" to the birth of Isaac). The Koran, meanwhile, does not name the son "sacrificed" when told the story of Abraham's sacrifice.

The Arab-Muslims consider Ishmael is the forefather of the Arabs.

The twelve whose son Ishmael is mentioned in the Bible were taken over by Muslim tradition. It is said that two of them settled in Mecca , where they fixed their abode, namely: Nebaioth and Kedar. Kedar was the ancestor of the Quraysh , the tribe of Muhammad.

The Qur'an describes Ishmael twice "endurance . "

Note

The descendants of Ishmael are called Ishmaelites "not to be confused with the" Ismaili "who are members of the Ismailis , a branch of Shiism.
