The Book of Isaiah
Under the guise of a unique book of 66 chapters, the book of Isaiah is in fact present in three distinct parts that could form three separate books:
- Chapters 1-39: Isaiah presents the historical context, with the rise of Assyria , to the attempt to take Jerusalem by Sennacherib ;
- Chapters 40-55: Isaiah mentions the rise of Cyrus II , king of Persia , heralding the end of the exile in Babylon ;
- Chapters 56-66: Isaiah focuses on the situation in Jerusalem shortly after returning from exile. This section contains probably the prophecies of many prophets.
Some doubt that chapters 40-66 were written by Isaiah himself and felt that they were written at a later time. Still, the New Testament mention of these parties as well as the rest in the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of John.
