The Task Force of the Gendarmerie Nationale (GIGN) is an elite unit of the French Gendarmerie Nationale specializing in operations against-terrorism and hostage rescue. His motto is "The GIGN, Shaping the Life ... .

The GIGN is based in Satory ( Versailles ), its training center and training camp located in Chilly Beynes ; to participate in the selection, one must already be cops and have less than 34 years.

Since 1 September 2007 a major reorganization took place. The "new" GIGN brings together under one name all the men of the old GSIGN . It will be possible to hire up to 200 men trained and accustomed to work together during large-scale interventions (mass hostage-taking for example, as in Beslan ) . The acronym GSIGN be no longer necessary and the initials "GIGN" no longer designates the same unit (as before).

Summary

Means

In August 2009, the GIGN comprise 407 soldiers.

The current operating budget of this unit, for fiscal year 2009 is 1.4 million euros, plus a drawing right to travel 0.5 million euros from the central budget of the gendarmerie .

Missions

  • Counter Terrorism: the GIGN operates primarily on the following tasks:
    • PIRATAIR: hijacking
    • Piratmer: hijacking or attack ship
    • Piratome: Nuclear Attack
    • Piratox: chemical or biological attack
    • Piratext: hostage-taking of French nationals abroad

For acts of terrorism does not fall within these categories (hostage taking, etc..), The distribution of tasks between the GIGN and RAID is done depending on where the warning occurs: the rural as well as airports is the focal area of the GIGN, the urban environment of the RAID.

  • Other interventions: the neutralization of frantic, the arrests of persons armed and dangerous.
  • Force Security and Protection (FSP): it covers the full spectrum of Security and Emergency.

On the national territory, sections of safety protection (SSP) provide daily protection of French and foreign dignitaries. They also provide this type of mission abroad for the benefit of diplomats serving in danger zones.

Along with protection missions, PHC engaged in the development of safe sites. Whether the benefit of the authority or protected during major events, the force deploys snipers, the research group of IEDs (GREP), or specialists Underwater investigations.

Finally, in an interdepartmental context, the PSF is regularly asked to perform security audits for the benefit of French representations abroad or sensitive sites throughout France. With recognized experience in this field missions to assess the security challenges and bring expertise and appropriate policy responses to increase the security level of facilities visited.

On the sidelines of the tasks mentioned above, the military force that regularly participate in training elite troops abroad.

  • SSP missions:
    • Close protection of VIPs.
    • Security of embassies and French diplomatic representations abroad (Algeria, Cte d'Ivoire, Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq ...).
    • Extraction of French nationals abroad.
    • Getting security.
    • Risk analysis and security audit.
    • Crisis management abroad.
    • Security events of national and international scope.
    • International Training.

To help carry out these missions, the training of the GIGN are very sophisticated and dangerous. Thus there were more deaths during these workouts during the missions themselves. The demonstrations by the group reflect the drives. While attending one of them as interior minister, Pierre Joxe was slightly wounded by a grenade which failed to be neutralized in time .

History

Following the kidnapping of the Israeli team in Munich Olympics in 1972, the Force created in November 1973 a Regional Intervention Team Commando (ECRI) in the mobile gendarmerie squadron 2 / 2 (current squad 26 / 1) of Maisons-Alfort. It became operational on 1 March 1974 , the official date of creation the GIGN. A month later, it was decided to create two groups of intervention of the national gendarmerie (GIGN)

  • GIGN No. 1, located in Maisons-Alfort and descendant of ECRI, operates on the territory of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th military regions.
  • GIGN No. 4 based in Mont-de-Marsan , established within the squad 9 / 11 mobile gendarmerie operates on the 4th, 5th and 7th military regions. She was more focused on naval exercises near the Atlantic seaboard.

The original intention was to multiply these groups throughout the country, but in 1976 it was decided to combine the two existing units into one national GIGN, Maisons-Alfort. In 1983 , the GIGN is moved Satory Pasquier in the barracks (it bears the name of 1 policeman died in training Group) (district police at Versailles ), in the Yvelines.

"The Irish of Vincennes"

9 August 1982 , around 13 pm, takes place shooting the Rue des Rosiers , a man threw a grenade inside the restaurant Goldenberg commandos and four to five men went down the Rue des Rosiers in pulling in the crowds. Six dead and twenty-two wounded are counted . To find the instigators of this attack, Franois Mitterrand adviser and installs a terrorist cell in Elysee and entrusted the direction to the commander of the GIGN, Christian Prouteau.

On 29 August 1982 , at 21 30 pm, members or former members of the GIGN led by Captain Paul Barril burst into the apartment at Vincennes a man named Michael Plunkett, suspected him and his fellow Irish to belong to the IRA , and make a decision of explosives during a search following the arrest .

It was later found that the police had brought their own explosives in the apartment of Vincennes. After nine months of detention, the "Irish of Vincennes" is finally released in late May 1983.

This affair made great noise early in the first term of Francois Mitterrand , including the fact that the newly elected president had appealed to the GIGN gendarmes to compose his presidential guard, unlike his predecessors who used the police. The case of the "Irish of Vincennes" thus became the "policemen of the Elysee."

Major operations

The GIGN has conducted hundreds of transactions since its inception, both the release of hostages that the inquiry of madmen ("neutralization" in the jargon of the unit). Here are the most known:

  • In May 1974, the GIGN 1 occurs during a mutiny in the prison of Fleury-Merogis. Their involvement is crucial to resolve the crisis with minimum violence.
  • release (in cooperation with the 13th half-brigade of the Foreign Legion ) to thirty children taken hostage by terrorists FLCS (Front for the Liberation of the Somali coast) to Loyada in the French colony of Djibouti (in the time the French Territory of Afars and Issas ) on 3 February 1976. In this operation, two children, seven terrorists and nine Somali soldiers were killed .
  • intervention following the hijacking by five anti-terrorist Croatian Titoists a Boeing 727 of the TWA flight ensuring New York - Chicago in September 1976. The GIGN reached through negotiation to secure the release of 49 hostages and surrender to terrorists.
  • intervention at Orly-Ouest to solve, together with the brigade anti-gang Commissioner Robert Broussard , hijacking of a Caravelle ensuring Air Inter Flight 429 (Paris-Lyon), September 30, 1977. The gunman Robert Jacques holds 94 people hostage, including the member Lucien Neuwirth and a former minister, Philippe Malaud for nearly seven hours, when making use of a grenade, sparking the assault of police and gendarmerie. The operation ended with the death of one passenger and wounding four others, one seriously. Jacques Robert goes and is imprisoned .

  • involvement of several men of the GIGN at the capture of the Great Mosque of Mecca , from 23 November to 5 December 1979. The police seem to have actually developed the final plan of attack, but the number of hostages (several thousands) and terrorists (about 130) the fact that there are a large number of victims.
  • intervention in the hostage taking of the hotel Fesch by a commando led by Corsican Marcel Lorenzoni in February 1980. The terrorists surrendered after negotiating with the GIGN .
  • release of hostages from a hijacked plane at Le Touquet in May 1981. The hijacker, who wanted to force the Pope to reveal the third secret of Fatima , is controlled with bare hands during a surprise attack.
  • arrest of a gunman at Chelsea in April 1982. The latter, armed; draw more than 2,000 cartridges in a day. The commander Prouteau soon realizes that this madman is not an ordinary madman, then committing attempted negotiations, understands that his goal is to challenge the GIGN. Therefore the commander chooses not to take his men into traps likely. In the evening, enjoying a relaxation of the frantic and made a diversion by blowing up the door of the apartment of the man, a police control the gunman with his bare hands.
  • arrest Filipe Bidart , leader of Basque terrorist group Iparretarrak February 1988
  • release of hostages held in the cave Ouvea in New Caledonia in May 1988. The operation is generally successful despite the death of two soldiers from the DGSE and 19 pro-independence Kanak.
  • members of the GIGN, sometimes under the authority of the COS , participated in operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995 , including the arrest of war criminals.
  • On December 26, 1994 , release of the 164 passengers on Flight 8969 Flight AF taken hostage by terrorists four GIA who planned to crush the aircraft on the Eiffel Tower. The GIGN stormed the aircraft, landed at the airport of Marignane, near Marseille , and succeeded in killing four terrorists and save all hostages without loss side but eleven wounded policemen at various levels. The assault was filmed by television, and made the group famous in the world. Shortly after the GIGN was held the ceremony celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Group, which was the occasion of a record: more than 650 missions conducted more than 500 hostages freed dozens of terrorists killed hundreds of criminals and terrorists decided by the GIGN, who complained during this period the death of 5 of his men in training and 19 wounded in operation (including 9 of the assault Marignane).
  • In September 1995, the GIGN involved with the EPIGN to hunt for Khaled Kelkal in the forests surrounding Vaugneray near the neck Malval (Rhone). Most men will be reminded of the GIGN to participate in Operation Azalea Comoros before the end of the hunt and it's EPIGN that puts an end to it by shooting Khaled Kelkal.
  • participation in the operation Azalea (the release of Comoros ), including the arrest of mercenary Bob Denard under the authority of the COS in September and October 1995.

  • intervention in collaboration with the Commando Hubert of the ship Pascal Paoli of SNCM in 2005, hijacked by marine unionists TCC.
  • 19 January 2007 , arrest of a gunman cut his home in Gensac-sur-Garonne. The GIGN under fire during the installation of the device (20 men) who injured a member of the team. At the time of the attack, around 22 pm, the suspect opened fire on the triad of mind: he killed the Sergeant Chief Frederic Mortier (35 years, promoted to Major posthumously) and injures another of his comrades. This is the second member of GIGN killed in operation.
  • on 11 April 2008 , Thalathine operation. Bringing the plan Piratmer. Intervention in the hostage taking on the Ponant , luxury ship off the coast of Somalia. International presence

Widely recognized as one of the units of intervention are most effective in the world, the GIGN is an elite unit of the French Gendarmerie Nationale. His many successful (nearly 600 hostages released, more than 1,000 criminals captured or killed) during the various operations he has had to make up for 10 years an international benchmark for safety of civilians. The GIGN is best known in December 1994 during the hostage taking of an Air France by the GIA.

7 of its members died during maneuvers of the year, and 2 members in operation, two noncommissioned officers including a sergeant leader.

The GIGN occurred abroad ( Djibouti , San Salvador , Saudi Arabia , Country Basque Spanish, Niger , Comoros ).

Armament

"Our basic principle is to reduce the use of firearms until the last moment"
Denis Favier, the commander of the GIGN 1992 to 1997.

Despite this goal of maximum GIGN avoid the use of weapons , the Group has a weapon to meet specific needs. We do not use assault rifles as a G-3 TGS cons a madman, they are reserved for use in quasi-military situations. At the opposite, in the case of an extreme intervention as in the Taking of Hostages of flight AF 8969 in Marignane, it is necessary to have all types of weapons, the .357 Magnum rifle Manurhin precision through the PM HK.

Arming the "basic" on a mission consists of a handgun for every man, plus an MP-5 and a 12 caliber rifle for support.

Each member group has three or four handguns and at least two guns. In total, there are few for the Group 900 weapons and 1000 optics. Weapons (from sniper rifle to the handgun) are tested on test Stabilisator 3000 A1 of the French brand L2S.

Many weapons have been changed on command to the GIGN. Do not forget the accessories generically called "sighting aid" collimators (sighting systems non-magnifying, often luminous), magnifying glasses, laser sights, flashlights, night vision equipment, etc.. The changes and sighting aid on these weapons are detailed along with the weapons themselves.

Weapons are made from the most frequently used to least used. Exceptions: precision weapons (depending on order sizes).

Handguns

  • Manurhin MR-73 in .357 Magnum with various barrel lengths (4 ", 5 inches, see 8 inches and 10 inches for precision shooting), widely used since the beginning of the existence of the GIGN. It still is the handgun most commonly used by men as the principal weapon of the GIGN. However, most men are simultaneously a revolver and an AP ( semi-automatic pistol ) size "compact" (mainly Glock 19 , SIG-Sauer P228 , FN Five-seveN and PAMAS G1 S). Today they are no longer used.
  • Glock 19 9 mm Para. the handgun used most visibly after the MR-73 (and to a lesser extent the G26 and G17 are also used), including divers from the group because of its high resistance with water. It is frequently equipped with a tactical flashlight Insight Technology M3 or M6 LED with integrated laser. Amended in the absence of safety latch.
  • S & W 686 GFS "Stainless" in .357 magnum guns of various lengths of 4 to 10 inches, preferred to MR-73 for some elements, but systematically replacing divers receive intervention (Manurhin does not seem as resistant water). Divers also use the Glock 19 and the Five-seveN, but without the tactical lights.
  • Sig-Sauer P228 (and its "big brother" P226 ) in 9 mm Para. with large-capacity magazines of 20 rounds in addition to the normal 15 cartridges and sometimes Insight Technology M3 LED lamp. The adoption of P226 by the GIGN pleads for its quality, even though it was rejected by French police in favor of the Beretta 92F in the 1980 ...
  • FN Five-seveN Tactical MOI of 5.7 mm with a fixed rise handlebars and elongated (since 2004?) possibly with a lamp-laser Insight Technology M6 on Picatinny rail.
  • GIAT PAMAS G1 S 9 mm Para. (Parabellum) Beretta 92G was built under license the service weapon of the National Gendarmerie (before Sig Sauer SP emloi 2022), but it is rarely used in the GIGN.
  • SIG-Sauer Pro SP 2022 in 9 mm Para. Handgun main GIGN (Also throughout the Gendarmerie and Police Nationale) in staffing and replacement PAMAS G1

In conventional operation, handguns are usually used compact models (RM-73 gun 4 "Glock 19, P228) by cons, the Glocks 17 and P226 are used in" missions khaki "(naturalistic) where space constraints are less important.

submachine gun

  • HK MP5 A5 versions (3-round burst selector), and SD3-K PDW (both with selectors SEF), equipped with sighting aid on top of the weapon sights Aimpoint or EOTech 550 AA CompM2, bezel Trijicon ACOG sights 3.5 x 35 or even type "mini-bezel" side mount, often seen in other French special forces (CPA 10 and 30, paratroopers from the Army ). Navalized version it replaced the Uzi in divers. Since the first half of the 1990s , the MP-5A5 are equipped with a handguard for mounting a sighting aid, otherwise it should be noted the use since the early 2000s on the MP-5A5 and MP 5K PDW mounting SureFire "cocking tube mount" on the end of gas intake tube to attach two accessories, these accessories are lasers day / night SureFire L72 and L75 red infrared (visible point to the intensifier) and flashlights Nitrolon P. The MP-5SD6 can receive a lamp fixed beneath the barrel with silencer rings.
The "PM HK" (as it is commonly called the Group) is still widely used despite the arrival of the FN P90 ballistic interesting characteristics.
  • FN P90 Tactical Laser with built-in handle. It strengthens and partially replaces the MP-5 and could even replace them in divers. The P90 offers a large capacity of 50 cartridges and pulls very powerful ammunition FN 5.7 x 28 mm with a power of penetration to neutralize opponents sheltered or equipped with bulletproof vests. It is the standard weapon of the heads of operational divisions and tactical groups. The three Picatinny rails allow for attaching a variety of accessories, usually a collimator CompM2 Aimpoint on top rail (the EOTech is never seen mounted), a laser SureFire on the right side and a high intensity lamp left side. Eventually, a muffler and a bag Gemtech SP90 recovery sleeves can be added.

shotguns

  • Remington 870 in 12 caliber Magnum, usually with a folding butt sideways and under-barrel longer than the barrel, and is also equipped with a Picatinny rail in the top position on the head often welcoming collimator (Aimpoint CompM2, Aimpoint 3000 ou EOTech 550 AA), et une lampe ou un laser (voire les deux simultanment) sont souvent fixs sur la pompe.
  • Benelli M3T Super 90 in 12 Magnum caliber rarely seen, unlike the Remington.
  • Franchi SPAS 12 Automatic Shotgun Special Purpose also 12 gauge single shotgun in the world with a fire selector (to select between a manual or semi-automatic). Its deterrent and made an impressive weapon appreciated response forces.

Assault rifles

The GIGN, like most advocacy groups of Gendarmerie , used assault rifles in the external environment:

  • HK G3 TGS , the only assault rifle in 7.62 mm commonly used by the GIGN. It is mainly used in the natural environment (such as reconnaissance "missions khaki") and by specially trained teams to fire from helicopters, which made these teams nicknamed "Team G-3 '. The G-3 TGS is a great support weapon "heavy" compared to other rifles of the GIGN to 5.56 mm because of the 7.62 mm NATO, its remarkable accuracy up to 400 m and his HK 79 grenade launcher 40 mm (used with fragmentation grenades, perforators or gas). Its size, fixed stock and its powerful weapons (which could easily pass through walls and reach the hostages or the police of another assault team) are not being used in urban terrain. The G-3 TGS GIGN are all equipped with a fire selector numeric type and a butt of MSG-90. We can distinguish a variant "diurnal" and "night" at the G-3 GIGN: Variant "Daytime" is equipped with a grenade launcher HK 79, a collimator daytime Aimpoint 3000 or 5000 and a mounting SureFire cocking tube mount 490 or 491 for a lamp and a laser. Alternative "night" is equipped with Aimpoint CompM2 (compatible with light intensifiers Lucia), the HK 79 is removed and the hand guard has no accessory or bipod mounting SureFire is sometimes absent, sometimes present The lamp in this case with an IR filter. Photos also show Aimpoint 7000S and a laser under the handguard in addition bipod. For "Team G-3", G-3 versions are used in "daytime" and "night" with a recovery of metal sleeves to prevent cases ejected can not cause damage or obstruct the crew or team of shooters.
  • SIG-550 and 551 SWAT Hensoldt bezel with 6 x 42 BL, SIG-552 Commando with a collimator Bushnell HOLOsight first generation assault rifles in 5.56 mm used in most GIGN.
  • HK 33 EA2 with a folding stock HK type A3, a 3-round burst selector with four positions and a daytime telescope Hensold 6 x 42 BL and a bipod under the barrel for use as rifle sniping (ambush). Other sighting aid can be mounted on a mounting SureFire "cocking tube mount. Recall that the HK 33, derived from the G-3 5.56 mm, keeping excellent accuracy even in its standard version (G-3 HK 33 and both had specific versions of sniping as the famous 3SG1-G). We can differentiate it from its G-3 charger curve, lack of systematic and grenade launchers to fire selector symbols.
  • Giat FAMAS F1. ambidextrous weapon. little used because it is too cumbersome (butt rather long and not foldable), and the weapon is too heavy for tactical use in building, it nevertheless has a great pace and firepower. (Capacity: 25 shots, caliber: 5.56 F1, effective range: 300m Maximum range: 3200m, system: cylinder head semi-locked).
  • HK G36 C 5.56 NATO rifle, equipped with a tactical folding stock, complete with a telescopic sight with red dot and grenade launchers in supplmentd'un HK. This weapon is particularly used by Force Protection and Security of the GIGN.

Precision Weapons

  • Special models of MR-73 at 8 and 10 inches equipped with goggles and bipods are used for precision shots at close range. The bezel is the most common Magnum Phantom 1.5 magnification produced by Bushnell (sometimes with a rubber protection around the eye identical to that of OB50), but 4 32 optical equipment as other such weapons. Of S & W with similar barrel lengths are also used with eyeglasses and bipods.
  • Three models of the brand Accuracy :
    • the AW in .308 (7.62mm NATO )
    • the AWS with a gun silencer (combined .308 ammunition "Sub" subsonic) and the only one of three types to have a folding stock.
    • the AW .338 Lapua Magnum SM (8.6 70 mm) for fire intermediate between the 7.62 and 12.7.
Over sixty replace AW since 1995 the old EN-F1 , having completed twenty years of loyal service. Fifty AW Super Magnum .338 Lapua Magnum entered service in 2003 to fill the "hole" between the ammunition of 7.62 mm and 12.7 mm. The GIGN has signed a partnership with the manufacturer Accuracy International for him to share the results of trials of these rifles in all weather conditions.
The telescope used for these three arms is the Schmidt & Bender 3-12 50 Mk.II with a Mil-Dot reticle (like all precision weapons currently used by the GIGN) 30 30 mm provided with a luminescent red spider intensity changed.
Each of the eight groups of tactics GIGN Accuracy eight wins in operation equipped with a light intensifier Simrad KN200 3 rd generation mounted on the magnifying glass for shooting night, making it possible to use the same weapon with the same optical day night. Time the FR-F1, he had to choose between a copy with a telescope or another day with an intensifier OB50.

TE teams have more of a laser rangefinder Leica Rangemaster LRF 1200 with a view 7 21 mm with an accuracy of one meter with a range of 15 to 1100 meters, a mini-weather station Skywatch Geos 9 ( anemometer - wind vane , compass , hygrometer , thermometer , barometer , altimeter and shows combined into an object of a few grams) of a water bag , a haversack and shooting since 2003 - 2004 a book of specific fire Group.

Sub-lethal Weapons

The low reliability of sub-lethal weapons and their danger has long limited their adoption by the GIGN. The favorite technique was shot in the shoulder with a revolver or sniper rifle, a bullet in the shoulder of the arm is a very effective technique of neutralization.
