Inri (Phrase)

Crucifix surmounted by the inscription INRI.

INRI is the abbreviation of the term Latin "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." It is also that of Imperium Romanum In Nomine, on behalf of the Roman Empire. Another meaning, and later inspired alchemy, is sometimes given the acronym: Igne Renovatur Integra Natura ("By fire nature is regenerating itself").

INRI is the titulus which had been entered by the Romans on the cross of crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth , condemned to death by the Roman procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate (see Passion of Christ ).

This titulus is from the Gospel according to John , "Jesus King of the Jews in the Gospel according to Matthew and "This is the king of the Jews in the Gospel according to Luke . The Gospel of John says that the inscription was criticized: The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not: King of the Jews. But that he said: I am the king of the Jews. Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written. "

This sign was only when the mere indictment of Jesus, executed as a criminal policy, hence its decision on the cross.

The text says that by this sentence, the Romans wanted to deride the one who proclaimed himself the Messiah. They crowned their own way, with a tiara of thorns.

It is also said repeatedly in the Gospels (especially that of Matthew and Luke ) that Joseph would be the direct descendant of King David , and thus the expression "king of the Jews" would mean Ironically the inheritance of Jesus. However, this genealogy is subject to controversy.
