Image Acheiropote

An image acheiropote (Greek: , literally "not made with hands") History

The image concept acheiropote exists in ancient literature: Cicero, in connection with a representation of Ceres, spoke of an image not made by human hands and "dark sky".

But it is in the Byzantine period that images acheiropotes become important: the Mandylion , or image of Edessa, is the best example. The first mention of its existence dates back to the sixth century. Very many copies of this image were made and became icons.

Scientific analysis

Scientists endeavor to explain the formation of these images . The most famous and most controversial of these is the Shroud of Turin , whose studies scientists have actually started in the late nineteenth century. Studies also focus on the Virgin of Guadalupe and more recently on the veil of Manoppello.
