Ilan Halevi
Ilan Halevi (Hebrew: ) is a journalist and politician, Jewish and Palestinian , born in 1943 in France. It is one of very few Jewish figures say highly placed in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), but it is secular and atheist. He describes himself as "100% Jewish and 100% Arab" Biography Halevi was the official representative of the PLO in Europe and the Socialist International. He was also Vice- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PLO in the government of Mahmoud Abbas (aka Abu Mazen) and participated as such in the Madrid Conference of 1991. According to Hanan Ashrawi (in this side of the Peace: A Personal Account), Halevi was a member of Maavak (Struggle), described as a "small group of radical Israeli anti-Zionist "in the early 70s. In 1973 , the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War and following the change in strategy of Palestinian activists in the Occupied Territories, he joined with groups including Israelis and militant Palestinians against the occupation. He helped including Palestinian activist Bashir al-Barghuti, board member of the Communist Party of Jordan , to get permission to return to the West Bank. Very critical vis--vis Zionism , Halevi has written several books on the subject and is a founding member of the Journal of Palestine Studies ( 1981 ). He currently lives in Berlin.
