Ibn Al Muqaffa

Persian fables

Abdallah Ibn al-Muqaffa (in Persian : ) is a writer Persian prose writer and a great language Arab born about 720 at Gour, the current Firouzabad , Fars province - Iran, in a family zorastrienne , and has converted the Islam when he was young adult, and died about 757. Although his conversion to Islam remained suspect in the eyes of the Orthodox, the reasons for his execution by Caliph Al-Mansour are political and ideological (a tragic death: he was dismembered and placed in bright light.)

Translator of Persian works into Arabic, Ibn al-Muqaffa is the author of the book in Arabic entitled Kalila wa Dimna , a translation of a collection of animal fables of the Panchatantra (Indian tales) to 750.

The French poet Jean de La Fontaine inspired by Kalila wa Dimna to 1644 , then made an adaptation of the fables in French under the title "The Book of Lights" (a few well-known fables: The Cat, the Weasel and the Little Rabbit The Two Pigeons, The Milkmaid and the Pot milk ...)

The illustrious Abdallah Ibn Al-moqaffa '(famous author of' Kalila and Dimna 'which was inspired to compose La Fontaine's fables) surpassed by the elegance of his prose all the men of his time. Abdullah was among atheists during the reign of the Caliph Musa Al-Hadi. It must be said that atheists were very numerous during this period. They ridiculed the doctrines and dogmas of Islam. Abdullah was appointed to compose something more beautiful than the Koran, and thus meet the challenge. He asked for a year to complete this work, a lot of money, paper, parchment and ink. He says he will begin drafting a chapter, and begin again to make it more perfect, until it is as he wishes. He therefore retired, and no one dared disturb him. After six months, his friends wanted to know where he stood. On entering his house, he saw him the illustrious writer, sitting in front of a sheet of paper, the pen in hand, in the attitude of reflection, and right and left of him a great amount of paper blackened and torn. He asked him what he had produced during these six months .- Nothing, "he said. The first day I was at work, I took the Quran and reading it from beginning to end, I eliminate all the verses particularly beautiful, I knew that could not easily imitate to try my hand at first to those who were in the range of my intelligence. But despite my eloquence, I stayed for six months on a single verse, which I constantly remake, and it occurred to me no idea where I am satisfied or that we can compare the original .- What is that verse? - It's a verse from the story of Noah "it was said: earth, swallow your water, sky, hold your rain. And the water was diminished, and the decree was executed. And the ark rested on the Djoudi. And it was said that people bye sinners! " (Surah 11/verset 46). His friends said to him in six months you have failed to make a single verse, how long would it take you to compose so many thousands of verses, laws, regulations and defenses, both similarities and miracles found in the Qur'an? Do not think about it, and stop this work. And they gave up their project. Sources: "The Golden Age of Abbasid" - Tabari
