He had to pay tribute to Alfonso VI of Castile. This became threatening after the Christian reconquest of Toledo in 1085. al-Mu'tamid appealed to the Sultan Almoravid of Morocco , Youssef Ibn Tasufin , who defeated Alfonso VI, November 2, 1086 at Sagrajas (az-Zallaq) and then turned against his protege by taking, among other things, the kingdom of Seville. His attitude wavering between 1089 and 1090, led to the conquest of his kingdom by the Almoravids, who deposed in 1091 and then exiled him to Morocco, where he died in 1095 at Aghmat.

Muhammad Ibn Abbad Al Mutamid is best known as a poet. In his poems written in exile, he recalls his past greatness, and gives as an example of the instability of fortune.
