Hypothetical Planets

Planets and satellites put in doubt or refuted solar system of significant size, planets or moons.

Not found in that list items imagined in fiction.

They are ordered by increasing distance from the Sun. Italics are placed objects known to give an idea of the respective positions.

Key:

Al: Astrology: object invoked by astrologers only
Ant: object whose existence was supposed by ancient civilizations
Art: Artifact: an object from observation error
H: Hypothesis: object not observed directly but whose existence has been proposed as an explanation for some observations, historically, some objects that were originally in this category have been confirmed in June 1846, Neptune was in this category
P: Past: An object believed to have existed in the past, now destroyed
Ps: Pseudo-science
R: Dispelling: object now known that there is no
  • Vulcan H, R: nearest planet to the Sun than any planet confirmed, proposed to explain an anomaly in the orbit of Mercury - finally explained by general relativity
  • Vulcanoids H: A hypothetical asteroid belt occupying the area dynamically stable spreads between 0.08 and 0.21 astronomical units from the Sun, well within the orbit of Mercury. Asteroids Vulcanoids take the name of the hypothetical planet Vulcan, astronomers of the nineteenth century sought to discover in order to explain the excess precession of the perihelion of Mercury - that general relativity highlights.
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
    • Anti-Earth : Ant, H, A planet supposed to be at the point opposite to the earth by symmetry about the Sun , can not exist without being detected given our current knowledge of celestial mechanics (and observations of various space probes)
    • Theia H, D: admitting that the Moon was formed following the impact of a major object with Earth, Theia is the impactor.
    • Second moon of Earth Art, R
      • Lilith (Moon) Art, R, Al, aka the Black Moon.
      • Not to be confused with the Black Moon in the direction of Dom Neroman , which is a geometric point set (the question of its existence does not arise: there is a point, not an object)
  • Asteroid Belt
    • Planet V H, D: planet believed to have been located between Mars and Jupiter, proposed to explain the movement of certain objects in the asteroid belt
    • Phaethon H, P, A: planet which it is proposed that the asteroid belt would be the debris today hypothesis rejected in favor of forming the belt by accumulation, an object corresponding to the same description is appointed by Tiamat 'UFO Zecharia Sitchin
  • Saturn
  • Planet X : a generic term for several hypotheses planets Transneptunian
    • Super-Pluto H: planet proposed to explain the movement of certain objects in the Kuiper belt
    • Nibiru : Ant, Ps star known to the Babylonians , probably Jupiter ufologist Zecharia Sitchin proposes a pseudo-scientific theory that Nibiru is following an object unidentified by modern astronomers, but can cause disasters in its passages
    • Persephone : H, R: gas giant far proposed to explain anomalies in the orbit of Neptune - finally explained by an error in estimating the mass of Neptune itself
      • H is also called as the planet given by John Matese , playing the same role as Nemesis, but being a planet of Jovian type, not a star
  • Pickering planets : a series of planets Transneptunian proposed by William Henry Pickering
  • Tyche : H "new" ninth planet in the solar system, yet to confirm.
  • Nemesis H: companion star to the Sun, including Richard A. Muller suggests that disruption in the Oort cloud of comets cause bombings
