History Of Oman
Summary |
Antiquity and Middle Age
Peninsula of Oman, producer of incense , was in ancient times an important commercial activity with Mesopotamia , the Persian , the India and the island of Dilmun. The country was dominated by the Persians in the years after -536. Then, around 750 , the region served as a refuge for kharidjites of the sect Ibadite , which elected the first imam.
Modern History
The Portuguese took possession of the ports of the peninsula, but in 1649 - one thousand six hundred fifty , the Omanis drove out and acquired at their expense Mombasa , Kilwa , Zanzibar and Pemba. The Sultanate of Zanzibar became independent in 1861. In the late nineteenth century , the British sustained Dynasty Bu Sa'id.
Twentieth century
The Sultan Qaboos bin Said took power in 1970. The eastern part of Hadramaut , the Dhofar , was the scene of a serious rebellion ( one thousand nine hundred and sixty-four - in 1977 ), known as the Dhofar War. The Sultan accepted the establishment of a U.S. base on the island of Masirah in 1980 and made his country to join the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in 1981.
