Half-pipe snow

A halfpipe is a structure of snow is in the form of a half pipe. It consists of two long walls of snow that are rounded forehead and meet at their base. These rounded edges are called walls or spoons (walls in English). The upper edge of these walls is called copping.

Half-pipes are manufactured by tampers with special equipment that the size rounded tablespoons. We call this machine the pipe dragon or dragon masts.

A classic half-pipe wall has a height between 2 and 3 meters, but larger, called "Superpipe" can go up 4 or 5 meters at the copping. For the X Games , the walls are 6 or 7 meters.

How a passage

Here is the classic course of the passage of a rider in a half-pipe:

  • The rider leaps inside the pipe from one of the two Copping. He is said to "drop the copping"
  • It passes through the pipe width by taking a maximum speed
  • It was the "spoon" opposite its point of departure
  • His speed is sufficient for it off above the level of copping
  • It makes a figure in the air
  • It falls on the 'scoop' from which it took off
  • It passes through the pipe width in the opposite direction to start the "spoon" opposed
  • It performs this way of going back and forth to the bottom of successive pipe

The goals are the height of the jump, and the aesthetics and performance of the figure.

On a Superpipe, the world's best athletes can rise to over 7 meters above copping, a height of almost 12 meters.

Risks

The difficulty of a jump on a halfpipe is to keep up a vertical trajectory. Otherwise, the rider may fall on the copping, or more dangerous at the bottom of the pipe.
