The Gulf of California, also known by the name Sea of Cortez in Spanish) and Vermilion Sea is a Wed the Pacific Ocean that separates the Baja California peninsula of Mexico continental. At its extreme north is the mouth of the River Colorado. It is surrounded by the Mexican states of Baja California , Baja California Sur , Sonora and Sinaloa. Sea of Cortez is the name most used by residents.

The Gulf of California contains two large islands : ngel de la Guarda and Tiburn , as well as numerous other smaller islands from north to south, all classified as World Heritage of Humanity in 2005 History

He was named in honor of Spanish conquistador Hernn Corts by Francisco de Ulloa in 1539. Ulloa was initially believed that the Gulf led to the legendary Strait of Anian , which linked the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Melchior Daz made it important exploration expeditions in 1540.

In 2005, 244 islands, islets and coastal areas were ranked on the list of World Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO as the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California by virtue of their biological richness and research on speciation and the beauty of landscapes Ecology

The Gulf of California is home to about 890 species of fish (77 endemic) It is inhabited by 33 species of cetaceans, the bottlenose dolphin. It is also home to the Gulf of California porpoise , that is to say the only endemic marine mammal of Mexico and home to the blue whale , the largest animal on earth, and that of the humpback whale , which migrates from Alaska to breed in these waters.
