The Great Synagogue of Jerusalem Belz

In early 1980 , Rabbi Dov Rokeach Yissachar (II) of the Belz Hasidic dynasty launched plans to build a huge synagogue in Kiryat Belz, the district of Jerusalem where the Chassidim of Belz regrouped.
The building located in a hilly suburb, must have four inputs available for each of the four streets that border and be an enlarged replica of the building constructed by the first Rebbe of Belz, Shalom Rokeach of Belz in the city. It must include a grand main sanctuary, study rooms smaller rooms for weddings and Bar Mitzvah , the libraries and public areas.

In the course of 1980 and 1990 , many collections are held to raise the necessary funds.

The grand interior of the synagogue can accommodate 6,000 worshipers

As the original synagogue of Belz, which was built in 15 years, the new Beis Hamidrash HaGadol that now dominates its height throughout the northern part of Jerusalem, also took 15 years to be built. Dedicated in 2000 , its main sanctuary accommodates 6,000 faithful. The Holy Ark in wood carving has a height of 12 meters and weighs 18 tons. Its size allows it to retain more than 100 Torah scrolls. The nine candlesticks, 6 meters high and 3.5 meters wide, are each composed of more than 200 000 pieces of Bohemian crystal.

In contrast to the stately synagogue, a simple chair with a wooden lectern , used by the Rebbe Aharon of Belz when he arrived in Israel in 1944 , is protected in a glass showcase near the Arch.

The complex has several floors of rooms. The main sanctuary is used only for Shabbat and holidays , while during the week , the offices are held in smaller rooms located below the main hall. In these small synagogues shtieblach called, take place every 10 minutes, the offices of Shaharit (am) of Mincha (the afternoon) and Arvit (evening). In a larger room adjoining the place Tish (Hasidic celebration at the rally around the rabbi).

Lower floors are dormitories used by the Hasidim of Belz arriving in Israel from the United States and other countries for the holiday Rosh Hashana , Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Other halls are used for Shabbat dinner, and celebration of weddings and Bar Mitzvah.
