Summary |
Although translation of the Gospel of Mary was made from the Coptic, the first draft was made in Greek during the second century. This dating seems to be confirmed by a Greek fragment, the Rylands Papyrus 463 (fr) , which is dated III century, and whose identity with the Coptic text has been confirmed.
Content
The text has the main theme of mortality, the ascension of Christ and the ascension of the soul by Gnosticism. As Mary Magdalene is presented to the head of the apostles in this story, this indicates that the text was owned by a belief of Christianity atypical.
In this gospel the Savior sends its first openly teaching his disciples and Mary Magdalene secretly in an inner vision. This causes a violent reaction from Peter, who refuses to believe that the Savior has been able to transmit instruction to a woman unknown to his followers. This gospel shows therefore lived in a conflict even within a Christian environment at the beginning of our era. Anne Pasquier , professor of theology at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies from the University Laval , very well revealed that the two figures represent two different ecclesiastical traditions: the first, embodied by Peter, is the orthodox tradition or one that tends to become. This tradition denigrates the authority of the revelations received in visions and ban any participation of women within the Church. The other, which Mary is a symbolic figure, is legitimized by secret revelations or visions and by the possible equality between men and women.
Sophia, the Gnostic personality also plays a role in this gospel. They are mostly dialogues between Mary Magdalene and the apostles. The discussions are influenced by the spiritual gnosis.
