The gospel is a spiritual Christian, Protestant origin, which is a continuation of Negro spirituals. It has grown along with the blues original. The modern gospel artists have also incorporated elements of soul music.

The gospel was first developed among African Americans and whites in the south, before conquering the rest of America and the world.

The word Gospel means "gospel" literally spell god, that is to say, "Incantation of God." The Gospel Hymns are a first step towards the Gospel Songs of 1930. These are traditional hymns and popular melodies. It is a flow, a mutation of the ritual songs white Protestants. Since the year 1870 , the instruments are increasingly present offices: organ , harmonium , stringed instruments, clapping hands and body movements. The early 20 th century are witnessing a genuine artistic excitement for blacks. Gospel Hymns and Gospel Songs become the bases of which are both simple and sophisticated. But early in this century, we can not truly speak of Gospel.

The Gospel is clearly a musical revolt against a racist America. It is an expression of suffering recently emancipated blacks, but still under the white authority, especially in Southern states, where a strong migration to Northern cities ( Chicago , Detroit , New York ). These people do not engage politically even if they remain faithful to the Republican party, to Lincoln , their liberator.

The gospel involves more instruments, as already mentioned above, but also tends to refer to Jesus Christ and the apostles , that is to say the Gospels, unlike the Negro spirituals that evoked more characters the Old Testament ("Joshua Fit the Battle of Jerico" "Go Down Moses"), etc..

The Gospel contains vocal quartets and singers of renown.

The vocal quartet remains the most popular phenomenon of the Gospel. They are composed of two tenors , a baritone and a bass. This four-part polyphony, also known as Male Quartet has taken most of Barbershop Singers, who gathered in the barber shop. The harmonization of these simple nibbles is unusual to bring in a voice over the melody. These quartets are more spontaneous speech, are more likely than university choirs tired because of their rigor, their conventional side. Hence, a great success. We may quote one of the most famous, the Golden Gate Quartet during the period between the wars. In their early days, they called themselves the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers and sang a cappella in 1934. Between 1937 and 1943 , they recorded over one hundred titles in a religious but also secular in cabarets.

The most important women are mostly in connection with Dorsey that has put them on the front of the stage. Although the Gospel is developing in the years 1930 , it was not until 1945 that women can make themselves known in a musical register very macho.

Moreover, sometimes Catholic parishes hold liturgies appropriate to the Gospel flavor. Some bands and singers of Gospel
