Gonalo Coelho
Gonalo Coelho ( Florence , 1451 or 1454 - Seville , 1512 ) was a navigator Portuguese.
Biography
He studied at Pisa. In 1503 , working for the Portuguese crown, he made an expedition to the coast of Brazil in order to make the mapping study. The Crown was seeking recognition of the portion of land located below the dividing line of Tordesillas , so the proof that the territory belonged to Portugal.
Gonalo Coelho took with him the Florentine Amerigo Vespucci , who already knew the place because he had sailed with Spaniard Alonso de Ojeda in the service of the King of Spain , in 1499.
Among the Portuguese merchants who financed the expedition was Ferno de Noronha , who, in return, got the king of Portugal the first captaincy hereditary Brazilian coast: the island of So Joo da Quaresma (Lent of Saint John), current Fernando de Noronha , a sea harbor
Amerigo Vespucci was the first description of the island of Fernando de Noronha.
