Information Sources

The main sources of information are:

  • information gathered in the family and entourage;
  • To start in France , we can build on the family, that everyone has:
  1. ID
  2. family record book
  3. Announcements : Birth, marriage, death.

  • In France only data from more than 75 years (since shortly before it was 100 years but many councils are not aware, we must tell them), are accessible to all. For the protected period (less than 100 years) only the descendants or direct ancestors can justify their identity and their relatedness, get full copies. French law makes mandatory the issuance of such copies;
  • parish registers and civil registers (see History of civil status in France );
  • in France , the decennial tables which, since 1793, summarize for a period of ten years and shared all acts of civil status (births, marriages and deaths) in the alphabetical order every 10 years;
  • in France , deeds, generally abundant from the seventeenth century (departmental archives);
  • in France , the reference lists of enumeration of the population (census), regularly established since 1836 (except when in 1916 and 1941) (departmental and municipal archives);
  • in France , the actions of low and medium jurisdictions that may be locally common from the seventeenth century (departmental and municipal archives).

The information stored in the archives are generally not indexed and their reading is often difficult. Many volunteer actors - individuals or organizations - have produced a work of transcribing and indexing is often made available to the genealogist:

  • genealogical associations and informal groups of simple non-professional genealogists are often large county in France. They carry out systematic surveys of the state civil and church records (BMS) and other types of deeds, notarized, for example.

The result is broadcast on various media:

Rules for access to archives in France

The archives of Vital Statistics can be found in town halls , and county records (as appropriate). The vital registration and notarial minutes less than 100 years are not accessible to the public except:

  • exemption (research of historical, statistical or estate purposes)
  • Death certificates, communicated freely by all irrespective of the date of death (only acts over a hundred years are directly accessible, others are supplied as complete copies).

For marital status and especially for birth and marriage certificates, proof of his direct relatives (not collateral) with the person named in the act, or the nature of spouse can obtain a complete copy of the act. Beyond 100 years, the law allows direct access to documents (or their copies on microfilm or in digital form).

The archives can be available in several forms:

  • original paper records;
  • microfilm of those records;
  • digitized images of books (still rare).

Genealogical research are increasingly popular, unfortunately at the expense of the sources. The state records has increasingly degraded over the last twenty years than in the previous three centuries. It is therefore urgent to undertake a full digitization of funds, the means exist (machine to scan 2400 pages per hour). Just wanting to.

Photocopy of original records is generally prohibited, to avoid damaging them (risks of breaking the binding on a regular copier is not equipped with a "ramp" to that effect, deterioration of the ink by the flash light the unit). Also prohibited are the pictures with a flash, which should always be preferred natural light (with variable exposure time accordingly).

The Ordinance of Villers-Cotterets makes mandatory record keeping by the church in 1539, but the recording of baptisms on record is older, from 1400 in some churches in France.

From 1737, in France, there are two parallel series of parish registers (until 1792) and Vital Statistics (since 1793). The contents of the two series is supposed to be identical. Parish registers and civil status of the series "communal" are preserved in town hall or municipal archives, or deposited in the departmental archives. The parish registers of the series called "registry" are still preserved in the departmental archives.

Nominal lists of the population (census), in turn, can only be consulted after a period of 30 years.

Under French law, all information on access to vital statistics are available in the following documents :

  • Statement on Vital 's May 11, 1999, NOR reference text: JUSX9903625J;
  • Decree 62-921 of August 3, 1962, see section 9.

In France, microfilming has often been done by the Mormons who call themselves the task of reconstructing the family tree of humanity.

  • graphic representation (drawing tools) trees ancestry and progeny, even "cousins";
  • these two types of functions are frequently coupled in the same software.

A specification for exchanging data between genealogy software has gradually imposed, the standard GEDCOM , an acronym for GEnealogical Data Communications. It was originally developed by researchers at the Genealogical Society of Utah, now with the active participation of designers from around the world.

Free software is of course present in the field of genealogy. We include GeneWeb . from the INRIA , which has a manageable database, searchable by a web interface, and @ rbre , from the Cultural Laboratory A + H to propose a scheme for peer-to-peer (P2P ) genealogical data represented in 3D.
