Origins and early years

According to the genealogy of the family valet Rganhac, established by Jean-Hugues de Rganhac and his grandfather The prelate in Avignon

From 1316 , John XXII had his treasurer, a position that Gasbert shared collegially with Adhemar Amiel .

On 13 June 1317 , from the suspicious death (which would actually attack targeted the Pope) of Cardinal Jacques de Via , his brother Bishop of Marseilles

He was appointed bishop of Marseille on 12 September 1319 and a few days later, on September 18th 1319 , became chamberlain of the pope, an office he retained under Popes John XXII, Benedict XII and Clement VI until his death, is over 27 years , . Like all the chamberlains of the time, he was close to the pope, but was the only one with Stephen Cambarou has to have the technical expertise by its former treasurer .

In reality, the new prelate remained much in Avignon and ruled his diocese through vicars. He surrounded himself with familiar, we know a notary of Pope, Raymond de Laval, who was probably his brother and a nephew, secretary of the Papal Chancery. Later, in 1348 , one of his cousins argued that relationship to obtain a position of scribe .

Archbishop of Arles

On 26 August 1323 , he was appointed archbishop of Arles. He received the pallium on September 8 and did homage in the hands of King Charles IV the Fair on 8 March 1324. He would then find it easier to govern his diocese, while continuing to stay in Avignon and to exercise the same functions.

In 1326 and 1337 , he chaired the two Councils of Saint Ruf , near Avignon.

Archbishop of Narbonne

On 2 October 1341 , he was appointed Archbishop of Narbonne in the reign of Pope Benedict XII.

On 12 October 1342 , he bought a house in Toulouse , near the law school, to found a college to receive his order that school children would go to study in that city. On 13 March 1343 , he founded the college of Narbonne , in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary , the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul and St. Trophime , patron of the church of Arles. He ordered that twelve students studying at the University of Toulouse will be fed and maintained.

It also relates a strange story about him that illuminates the ways of the curia of the time. It is said that "for the sins of the flesh committed (sic) to the curia, Gasbert Laval consecrated in 1343 a portion of his fortune to install a new home in the work of penitents who welcomed courtesans and prostitutes willing to repent .

He died on 1January 1347 in Avignon. He had built a mausoleum in the Church of St. Trophime of Arles but was buried in Narbonne .

Arms

His weapons are, Gules three bars of silver .
