Gamaliel Ii

Rabban Gamaliel II, also known as Gamaliel of Yavneh , was the first leader of the Sanhedrin as Nasi in the year 80 (died circa 116 ).

In 80 , Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai leaves the Court of Yavne (Jamnia), shortly before his death.

A descendant of Hillel , Gamaliel II, grand-son of the former Gamaliel , who became director of the Academy of Yavneh and President (Nasi) of the new Sanhedrin.

His father, Simeon ben Gamaliel, one of the leaders of the Jewish revolt of 66 , is therefore suspect in the eyes of Rome.

At the time of Rabban Gamaliel:

  • the Nazarenes (notzrim) are considered a sect heretical.
  • the Passover (Pesach) can be celebrated without offering the traditional sacrifice of the paschal lamb (because of the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem ) and a new text, the Haggadah says, and accompanies the ritual of the evening Passover.
  • the study is the most important activity of Jewish life.

In debates between schools of Hillel and Shammai , Rabban Gamaliel is pronounced in most cases, for the first. It is a controversial leader who does not hesitate to excommunicate her step-brother, Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus , when the latter, sure of its right, refused to bow to the majority opinion he believes to be false nor to denigrate Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hananiah during a discussion on the scheduling. This attitude ultimately displeasing to the sages of Yavne, who decide to drop its duties. However, he continues to participate in debates, and will be reinstated as patriarch in a few years.

Once reinstated, he does not hesitate, in retaliation for reporting to prohibit any teaching in the name of Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Nathan who instigated the revolt. This prohibition was, euphemism, little respected.

Rabban Gamaliel also left us this principle, which dictated its existence (Treaty Shabbat 151b): "Whoever has compassion for others, heaven will have mercy on him who has no pity for others, Heaven will not pity for him. "
