The French Institute of Oriental Archaeology (or IFAO) is a French Institute of Research in Archaeology based in Cairo ( Egypt ), belonging to the network of French schools abroad. This is the first French scientific institution located in Egypt.

The IFAO is by statute a public institution with scientific, cultural and professional, under the authority of the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research.

His areas of research include the archeology , the history and philology of different civilizations having succeeded in Egypt.

The printing of the IFAO ensures the publication of the Institute's research, the BIFAO (Bulletin of the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology) since 1901, the Annals Islamic studies since 1954, BCAI (Bulletin critique des Annales Islamic studies) from 1984, the ECB (Newsletter of the International Group for the Study of Egyptian pottery) since 1975, and many other publications (see below). The printing of the IFAO created and used (and recommended to its authors) some fonts computerized. These fonts Unicode have been developed in conjunction with the IFAO by IT, printing and more language specialists Egyptian, Greek and Coptic, partly on the basis of the old cast lead used for a century. The download is available on the website of the IFAO. Hieroglyphic texts are composed using MacScribe.

The Institute has a library with over 80,000 volumes and an archives department, created in 1972, bringing together the scientific and photographic records of all work of the Institute since that date until today, and the record keeping older.

Scientific members are appointed for a term of one year, renewable three times over by the Minister of National Education, Higher Education and Research on the proposal of the Scientific Council of the institution, after consulting an admissions committee. The scientists are members of two sections: the first includes studies and Egyptology papyrological, and the second Coptic Studies, Arab and Islamic countries.

The IFAO was established on 28 December 1880 by a decree signed by Jules Ferry establishing a permanent mission in Cairo, Egypt counterpart of the French Schools of Athens and Rome , under the name School of Cairo. It was only in 1898, he received his final title of the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology.
