Summary |
Biography
Son of King Frederick William II and Frederica of Hesse-Darmstadt , he married in 1793 Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz ( 1776 - 1810 ), daughter of Charles II of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Frederica of Hesse-Darmstadt, noted for a princess her beauty that was to exert a strong influence from 1807 until his death in 1810.
Became king, he immediately dismissed the mentor of his father, Johann Christoph von Wllner (1732 - 1800). With his advisors, the Counts von Goltz and von Haugwitz , he tried to maintain a policy of neutrality during the Napoleonic wars , causing discontent of Tsar Alexander I. Although not part of the third coalition in 1805, he joined the allies of the Russians under pressure in October 1806. His army was annihilated at the Battle of Jena and the Battle of Auerstadt. Pursued by the French until East Prussia, he had to then go into exile with the remnants of his army in the Tsar Alexander I (who was, according to rumor, fell in love with Queen Louise).
But in 1807, his host Alexander I in turn defeated by the French. The peace was signed at Tilsit on the Niemen , but Prussia must abandon all the territories of Poland and pay for the occupation of French troops in strategic locations in the country.
The king accepted the situation but, at the instigation of the queen (who died in 1810), several ministers, including the Baron Karl vom Stein , Prince Karl August von Hardenberg , Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst , and Count August von Gneisenau , reformed the administration and the army for revenge.
In 1813, after the defeat of the Grand Army in Russia , he signed an alliance with Russia in the Treaty of Kalitsch and left Berlin under French control. Prussian troops played a decisive role in the victories of the allies.
At the Congress of Vienna , his negotiators were granted vast territories except the annexation of the entire Saxony he hoped. He abandoned his promise to give Prussia a constitution. His eldest son, Frederick William , succeeded to the throne.
