The flag of Morocco is red. This is one of the Alawite dynasty, in power since the seventeenth century. The previous dynasties, Merinids and Saadi , used a flag white.

A star green was added in the center when Morocco became a protectorate French so as to distinguish the flag of Morocco in other red flags. This star was retained after independence. The green star means wisdom, peace, health and life .

Summary

The present flag

Construction sheet

Initially and until 1915 the flag of Morocco was decorated with a six-pointed star known as Solomon's seal. The five-pointed star was imposed by Marshal Hubert Lyautey , then Resident-General of the Protectorate. This pentacle replaced the seal of Solomon by royal decree in 1915.

We find that star on the coat of arms of Morocco , between two lions.

The current flag of Morocco is generally green star symmetrical about the vertical centreline. It also occurs sometimes with the green star symmetrical about the horizontal centerline, the axial peak is then directed to the floating part. This variant has been seen at the Royal Mausoleum in Rabat.

History of previous flags

Before the Arab conquest (before the eighth century)

The earliest known inhabitants of Morocco was tribal Berber. The Phoenicians had established trading posts around the twelfth century BC. AD, among them Carthage (now Tunisia ) The Romans destroyed Carthage in 146 BC. but the cultural influence of the Romans was quite low in Morocco. In 429, the Vandals invaded Spain from Morocco, and in 534 incorporated into the Byzantine Empire.

First-era flag Arabic (eighth and ninth centuries)

In the early eighth century, the Arab commander Musa bin Noar conquered Tangier , installed a governor, and introduced the Islam in Morocco. The Berbers were converted, but revolted in 740 and founded an independent principality in the mountains of the Rif. The princes Idris I (d. 791) and Idriss II (d. 828) ruled all the Berber tribes and spread the Islamic faith. The Idrissids (789-985) founded the city of Fez , and made it their capital, both political and economic than religious. Dynasty Idrissids quickly lost its influence and power in Morocco after the death of Idris II. The power was then played during the tenth century between the Fatimids of Ifrikya (now the East of Algeria and Tunisia ) and the Umayyads of al-Andalus.
