It is identified in the incipit as "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ" (1P 1, 1). Some modern scholars have expressed skepticism about the fact that Peter , a fisherman from the Sea of Galilee , was able to write. Are questioning the cultivated style of Greek writing and lack of personal detail suggesting contact with Jesus of Nazareth. However, his own testimony, we know he used to write to Silvanus (1P 5, 12) (this name is the Latinized form of Silas, which is the name of a character known to be a disciple of Paul (2 Corinthians 1, 19, 1 Thessalonians 1, 1, 2 Thes 1: 1, Acts 15, 40), and is an apostle (1P 1, 1), "witness of the sufferings of Christ" (1 Peter 5, 1).

Background

The letter was written " Babylon "(probably Rome ) and was sent to the Saints in what is now called the Asia Minor shortly after Nero had started to persecute Christians.

Summary

Chapter 1 discusses the role which the Christ was foreordained, that of the Redeemer.

Chapters 2 and 3 say it is the cornerstone of the church , believers are a royal priesthood (sometimes called universal priesthood ), a nation holy (Chapter 2, 9-10) and that Christ preached to spirits in prison.

Chapters 4 and 5 explain why the gospel is preached to the dead and why the old are left to graze the herd.
