Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (in Arabic : ), born in 1922 in Riyadh and died on 1 August 2005 in Riyadh, was king and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and head of the house Saud from 1982 until his death. He was one of some fifty son of King Abdulaziz Al Saud , founder of the dynasty, one of seven he had with Hassa bint Ahmed Al Soudayri. Fahd suffered a serious stroke in 1995 that prevented him from exercising his official duties. His half-brother, Prince Abdullah , regent since 1996, succeeded him.

Youth
Shortly after his birth, his father Ibn Saud consolidated the preeminence of the family clan on the Arabian Peninsula , signing in 1927 the Treaty of Jeddah King of devoting the Hejaz and Nejed. At the age of 9 years, in 1932 , Fahd sees that his father officially founded the Saudi Arabia.
Prince Fahd made his studies at the Ecole des Princes in Riyadh, a school founded by his father for the education of the royal family. Then he went to the Institute of Religious Studies of Mecca where he studied the Islamic Salafi.
In 1945 , Fahd made his first State visit to abroad ( New York ) to attend the opening plenary session of the UN , where he accompanied his brother Faisal , who was then Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 1953 , aged 30 years, Fahd was promoted to minister of education by his father. That same year he made his first official visit to represent the house of Saud at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1959 , he led the Saudi delegation to the Arab League , showing its high destiny in the affairs of the kingdom. In 1962 , Fahd was given the key post of interior minister and second deputy prime minister five years later.
On 25 March 1975 , King Faisal was assassinated by a nephew. His half-brother Fahd became Crown Prince and First Deputy Prime Minister of his successor, Khaled.
Reign
When King Khalid died on 13 June 1982 , Fahd ascended the throne and appointed his half-brother Abdullah first deputy prime minister.
In 1986 , King Fahd declared himself " custodian of the two holy mosques ", two of the three holy places of Islam being on Saudi territory: Mecca and Medina.
At the time of the Gulf War , it allows the installation of permanent bases in the U.S. Army , which earned him some criticism Funeral After the death of King Fahd, several countries declared periods of mourning for three days: Algeria , Egypt , Iraq , Morocco , Kuwait , Lebanon , Qatar , Syria , Oman , Yemen , Bahrain , Libya , Sudan , Mauritania , Tunisia , Senegal and the Palestinian Authority. The Pakistan and UAE have reported a period of mourning for seven days and put their flags at half mast. The Jordan has even declared a mourning period of 40 days. The day of Aug. 2 is declared national day of mourning also in Spain. The Secretary General of Arab League Amr Moussa announced the postponement of the extraordinary Arab summit originally planned on August 3 at Sharm el-Sheikh. The United States announced they would send a delegation, but President George W. Bush should not be included. However, French President Jacques Chirac announced his presence as well as Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf , Jordan's King Abdullah II , the head of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas , the presidents of Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, UAE, Sultan of Oman, King of Bahrain, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak , Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco king's brother and Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade.
