Ezra Taft Benson

Ezra Taft Benson ( 4 August 1899 - 30 May 1994 ) is the 13th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1985-1994). He is also Secretary of Agriculture of the United States from 1953 to 1961, during the two terms of President Dwight David Eisenhower.

Summary

Childhood and Youth

President Benson was born on 4 August 1899 , in Whitney, Idaho (USA). He is the eldest of eleven children. When he was still very young, his father called from a mission for the Church. The family works to keep the farm during his absence. Later, eleven children meet each a full-time mission.

In 1918, towards the end of World War I, Ezra Taft Benson enlisted in the army. Then, he specialized in agriculture and studied at Utah State University. In 1921, he served a mission in England for the Church. After his mission, he continued his studies at Brigham Young University.

On September 10, 1926, Ezra Taft Benson married Flora Smith Amussen, who served a mission in Hawaii. They have six children.

  • In 1921 he was asked to complete a mission in England
  • In 1938 he was called to serve as stake president
  • From 1943 to 1973, he is a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles
  • From 1973 to 1985 he was President of the Quorum of the Twelve
  • From 1985 to 1994 he was President of the Church

In 1945, Benson was called to lead the EU mission and help people who face difficulties after the war. In ten months, he obtains 92 wagons of food, clothing, bedding and medical items. He is also working to reopen the missions of the Church in Europe.

Church President

In 1973, Ezra T. Benson succeeded Spencer W. Kimball as President of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, and in 1985 as president of the Church. During his early years as President of the Church, he put a new emphasis on the distribution and reading of the Book of Mormon reaffirming its importance as "the keystone of the religion of the Latter-day Saints, "on strengthening the family unit and missionary work.

It is also known for his general conference address condemning pride.

  • From 1953 to 1961, during the two terms of President Dwight David Eisenhower , he is Secretary of Agriculture of the United States.

Political Career

In 1953, Ezra T. Benson was appointed to the Secretariat of Agriculture of the United States by President Dwight David Eisenhower. Ezra T. Benson has accepted this position with the permission of Church President David O. McKay and served simultaneously to the Government of the United States and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ezra T. Benson opposed the government system of price supports and subsidies to farmers which he was responsible for dealing with the Eisenhower administration, arguing it was an unacceptable socialism. Nevertheless, he remained at his post in government during the eight years of President Eisenhower. He was chosen as the designated administrator of the Emergency Food Agency (emergency food), part of a secret group, later known as the Eisenhower Ten. The Eisenhower Ten or E-10 were a group of American citizens who have been secretly commissioned by President Eisenhower in 1958 to serve as a director in case of national emergency.

Scout

Ezra T. Benson has been throughout his life a strong supporter of Scouting. It began in 1918 as an assistant scoutmaster. On 23 May 1949, he was elected to the National Executive Board Boy Scouts of America.
