Evangelists
The Evangelicals (with caps), four in number, are the authors of one of the Gospels ( Matthew , "said the publican, Mark , Luke , John says the apostle or the evangelist). The Evangelists do not show up by name in their works and there is no evidence that the old titles are the original property. Most modern scholars believe, therefore, safer to say that the authors were anonymous, and that their names were assigned to narratives by later generations of Christians.
Symbolism
The four Evangelists are represented as allegorical of tetramorph : the winged man or angel for St. Matthew , the eagle for St. John , the bull for St. Luke and the lion (often winged) to St. Mark. This representation is inspired by a vision of the prophet of the Old Testament Ezekiel and the description of the four living creatures of the Apocalypse according to St. John.
The lion symbolizing St. Mark is usually winged, which distinguishes it from the lion of St. Jerome References
