Ecole Normale Superieure
In Francophone countries and Italy, a school Normale Superieure (ENS) is an institution of higher education for training teachers or researchers.
There are currently three teacher training colleges in France. The ENS is located rue d'Ulm in Paris , was founded by the National Convention in 1794 and is the oldest of all. Other ENS French are the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan and Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon. Higher teacher Cachan, Lyon and Paris are the only of many French Grandes Ecoles to accommodate two streams of science and letters.
Besides these, other institutions were established in Italy and Hungary on the model of school-d'Ulm Street.
From the 1960s, following the decolonization of Africa under French rule and to address the shortage of secondary teachers, the UNESCO has initiated and supported a program to create higher teacher in many countries of Francophone Africa. The name "Normal University" was borrowed from French ENS to give credit to the new institutions created even if no link is binding on the ENS of France and Africa .
