The Ecole des Ponts, created in 1747 under the name Royal School of Civil Engineering by Daniel Charles Trudaine is a high school French , whose primary purpose is to train officers of the engineering and civil engineering. It is renowned Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chausses in 1775 and is commonly called by metonymy , "Highways" or the "Bridges". Now located in the heart of the new town of Marne-la-Vallee on the campus of the Cit Descartes , it is under the Ministry of ecology, sustainable development, transport and housing.

On 1 July 2008, the school adopted as a brand name "Ecole des Ponts ParisTech" to confirm his appointment within ParisTech which he is a founding member. Nevertheless, the school retains the name "National School of Bridges and Roads" for any document to the liability of the institution History of the School

Origins

Following the establishment of the body of Highways in 1716 , a decree of the king's council decided in 1747 to the establishment of specific training for engineers of State, the Royal School of Bridges and Roads, the foundation of future Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chausses, established by Daniel Charles Trudaine. This then is the beginning of progressive and effective control by the state of the construction of roads, bridges and canals and the training of civil engineers. Previously, lords, guilds and religious orders shared with the State that competence and recruitment of technicians was done piecemeal. In 1775, the School is the current name of Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chausses.

The first director, in place from 1747 to 1794, was Jean-Rodolphe Perronet , engineer, administrator and scholar, including participation in the development of the encyclopedia or dictionary of the sciences, arts and crafts , led by Denis Diderot and Jean Rond D'Alembert. Without teachers, fifty pupils, Lebon, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre , Pierre-Simon Girard , Riche de Prony , Mchain and Brmontier was initially formed by self-learning in the fields of geometry , the algebra , the mechanics , the hydraulics. The visit of sites, learning collaborations among scientists and nobles, and participation in the survey map of the kingdom completed their training, which lasts from four to twelve years.

The increased powers of Engineers of Roads and Bridges, gradually raising on any proposed land use , resulted in an appearance at the French Revolution of criticism of a policy perceived as authoritarian. Parallel was established Polytechnic in 1794, bringing together students of Civil, Mining and Engineering.

Reaching related to major projects and industrialization

Many civil engineers ( Barre Saint-Venant , Belgrand , Biot , Cauchy , Coriolis , Dupuit , Fresnel , Gay-Lussac , Navier , Saint-Far , Vicat ) participated in the First Empire in the reconstruction of roads, not maintained during the Revolution , and many major development projects, particularly water. This increased complexity of their work and imposed an adaptation of the teaching of the School, which was also facing the emergence of a society where industrialization and mobility made their entrance.

A decree of 1851 defined the organization of courses, writing a yearly schedule, the quality of teachers and monitoring student work. In addition, he opened the School for students from non-Polytechnic, whether French or foreign, and to auditors. Preparatory classes were created in 1875 to supplement the lower educational levels of these new students.

The development of infrastructure and transport networks of the late nineteenth century was strongly influenced by the engineers of Roads and Bridges which many have become famous: Becquerel , Bienvenue , Caquot , Carnot , Colson, Andrew Coyne , Freyssinet , Rsal , Paul Stayed , Paulin Talabot ... It was at this time that the traits of the School were almost definitely established, apart from adaptations to technical progress and creation of new professorships, including the electricity applied, the political economy, the ' social economy , the urban , air bases ...

A modernized institution

New premises of the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech shared with the National School of Geographical Sciences.

It was after the Second World War that the School will open to the world economy and significantly increased enrollment, responding to growing demand for engineers as a body of Highways for the private sector. An important diversification of education also took place.

The year 1983 was marked by significant reforms in recruitment, curriculum, teaching methods and links with research and businesses and by the appearance of continuous training. In addition, the research laboratory, removed after the Second World War, is reintroduced into the school to address the need to link teaching and research.

Hall School of Bridges.

In May 2005, the ENSTA and the School have come together to provide opportunities for students from one school to finish their engineering program in the other. Between 1997 and 2008, the School is primarily located in Champs-sur-Marne on the site of the Cit Descartes , but also maintains its presence in Paris at 28 Rue des Saints-Peres, a situation that changed in September 2008, following the sale of the Hotel de Fleury (Paris building) state. In coming years the premises of the School will be expanded on the Cit Descartes , including the construction of a building "Descartes +" to host the latest laboratories and classrooms that are currently not located in the main building School's Champs-sur-Marne.

In addition, the School of Ponts part of research centers and higher education ParisTech and Universit Paris-Est.

Membership ParisTech allows school students to perform their options or third year in a different school of ParisTech.

Education and Degrees

With strong skills in civil engineering, environment, transport, urban planning, engineering, logistics and management, the Ecole des Ponts is able to offer educational programs of high level and broad scope domain of applied mathematics the economy and management.

L'Ecole des Ponts is one of general schools say. Students receive a broad education in fact oriented towards management and access quickly to senior positions in industry.

Three main types of courses are offered:

L'Ecole des Ponts is also an application school of Ecole Polytechnique , and trains engineers des Ponts

Departments

Facade of the Ecole des Ponts.

The formation of an engineering degree is structured around six departments, namely:

  • Civil Engineering and Construction
  • City, Environment, Transportation
  • Engineering Mechanics and Materials
  • Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science
  • Economics, Management, Finance
  • Industrial Engineering

An awareness of the architecture curriculum (the study "Structure and Architecture"), to enjoy the title of Architect , and even architectural degree through additional training is offered in parallel to the course Civil Engineering and Construction.

This training is offered in partnership with the architecture school nearby, the School of Architecture City and territories in Marne-la-Vallee.

MBA des Ponts

In 1987, the cole des Ponts founded his MBA in International Business, which teaches annually professors from leading universities in five continents. Based in the Bridge House in the heart of Paris, des Ponts MBA has expanded to three other programs:

  • MBA in Technology & Entrepreneurship
  • Tri-Continent MBA double degree with Temple University (USA)
  • Executive MBA double degree with Temple University (USA)

Research

The research within the school are within the following disciplines (the laboratory name corresponding brackets)

  • Atmospheric phenomena (CEREA)
  • Water, city and environnementt (LEESU)
  • Scientific Computing (CERMICS)
  • Information technology (IMAGINE)
  • Environment and Development (CIRED)
  • Social Science and Planning (LATTS)
  • Transport and Planning (LVMT)
  • Economics (PSE)
  • Soil Mechanics (CERMES), materials (LAMI), materials and structures in civil engineering (LMSGC) clustered within the UMR Navier

L'Ecole des Ponts was also the lead developer of Scilab with INRIA until 2007.

The Central Laboratory of Roads and Bridges or LCPC is a public establishment of scientific and technological .
