East
The east is the cardinal point is , and is opposed to the west (the west ).
The East, used absolutely, with a capital letter, refers to the spaces to the east of Europe :
- the Middle East is a term of French origin to designate a region of Asia and Africa including the countries of south-eastern Mediterranean. A synonym is the old Levant.
- The Middle East is an expression of English to mean almost the same countries, stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to Iran.
- The Far East refers to Asia bordered by the Pacific Ocean.
By extension, some countries or regions or communities have the word or the adjective East East added their names to show their position relative to the east of a more comprehensive reference entity (see Ethnocentrism ):
- the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantine Empire , eastern end of the separation in two entities of the Roman Empire , from the late third century and until 1453 , when the fall of Constantinople in the hands of Ottomans.
- The Eastern Question refers to diplomatic and political problems posed by the decline of the Ottoman Empire , from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century.
- The Christian East , "right lung" of the Christian West , refers vaguely to a set of Churches Christian , generally orthodox , in the tradition of the Great Schism of 1054.
- the Eastern Church or Church of Persia , or Church of Mesopotamia An exotic combination
By their cultures, landscapes and different peoples, the idea of East for Europeans since the Middle Ages an exotic and appealing: see related article Orientalism.
This combination of ideas stems from a combination difficult to disentangle . Tourism businesses still use this aspect to promote trips to Asia.
