A doctor is a health professional holding a diploma of doctor in medicine. It is responsible for treating diseases , disorders and injuries of his patients. His art is intimately linked with other health professionals such as pharmacists or dentist.

Training
Medical Training varies widely across the world. It is usually academic. In most developed countries, competition is used to select candidates, either at the beginning of training, after several years of it. After graduation from doctor in medicine, new doctors are generally subject to a period of supervised practice.
France
In France , medical studies are open to all graduates. But access in 2nd year of medical school is subjected to a selective contest late in the first year (10 to 15% success). The Undergraduate Medical Education ( CDR ) for 2 years. The second cycle of medical studies ( DCEM ) lasts 4 years. CDR and DCEM constitute a common core to all future physicians.
While the first joint training cycle gives mostly theoretical, the second round opens the way for the clerkship and medical practice itself, and culminates in the National Ranking Examination (NCE).
The Postgraduate Medical Education ( TCEM ) is mandatory and opens at the end of ECNs and can last from 3 to 5 years depending on the chosen discipline (among which are the specialties of general medicine (3 years) Medical (4-5 years), surgical, anesthesia and intensive care, gynecology etc.), and is the internship. During this phase, the contention of the State diploma of doctor of medicine is supported and given the title of doctor , allowing the practice of medicine. For some specialties and including surgery , additional training is required after TCEM and this phase lasts between 1 and 4 years. It may be a university or a clinicat assistantship specialty. This corresponds to the total surgery training from 11 to 15 years.
Medical studies in France is now leading to a change in the name of their organization with the transition to the European LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorate).
Regulation
In most countries, physicians must have permission from the government to practice medicine. They may also have to be members of a professional. In some countries, this kind of professionalism that allows doctors to practice while the government only recognizes the authority of the Order in the matter.

Several types of doctors may work in the hospital (outside Europe interns and residents in Canada) and have different status. Interns (students in 3rd cycle after the sixth year in Europe) and residents (doctors in training, having obtained their PhD after 5 years of university, Canada) have the right to prescribe and undertake acts therapeutic or diagnostic (see medical studies ).
Private practice
Private physicians practicing within a doctor's office where they work alone or with a few colleagues.
Occupational Medicine
In some countries, only employees of large companies, or employees are subject to hazards of occupational medicine. Elsewhere, as in France, all employees are involved in occupational medicine.
