Cyril of Alexandria

Cyril of Alexandria (b. 376 - 27 June 444 ), one of St. Cyril, became bishop of Alexandria in 412. He is Father and Doctor of the Church. It is a holy Christian , celebrated the June 9 by the Orthodox Church .

Summary

Patriarch of Alexandria on 17 October 412 , nephew and successor of Theophilus , he displayed great zeal against the heresies , closed churches Novatians and, not hesitating to kill women and children, expelled the Jews from the city. These brutal measures urged him into violent conflict with Orestes , prefect of Egypt , and were the occasion of gore ( 415 ), in which perished the philosopher Hypatia , a victim of a lynching which weighs heavily on the involvement the patriarch.

Cyril attached to eradicate paganism in Alexandria. He fought also Nestorianism he was condemned by the Council of Ephesus , 431 , with the help of Memnon of Ephesus , preaching the definition of Mary, Mother of God (Theotokos) and not simply the mother of Jesus (Christotokos ) depending on the grade of Nestorius - the point being the assertion of the full divinity of Jesus. He died in 444 , after a long magisterium of thirty-two years.

Recognized as a saint by the Orthodox and Catholics, it is celebrated on January 28 , June 9 and June 27 . He was proclaimed Doctor of the Church in 1882 by Pope Leo XIII.

In a hearing on 3 October 2007 Benedict XVI paid tribute to him for his significant contribution to the Marian cult.

Work

He wrote against Manes (Mani) , Plotinus , Apollinaire , and against the Emperor Julian.

It considers especially his treatise entitled the Treasury, against the Arians. He also left 60 Letters and Comments on St. John, published in Syriac by P. Smith at Oxford , 1860.

The best edition of his works is that of J. Aubert , Paris , 1638 , 7 volumes in folio, Greek-Latin, reprinted in 1859 in the Patrologia of Father Jacques Paul Migne. His homilies were translated into French by Morelle , 1604.
