Summary |
The crucifix is a symbol of Christian recalling the Crucifixion , that is to say the crucifixion of Jesus Christ , who died strapped to a cross.
A crucifix has essentially the form of a Latin cross , whose vertical line is extended downward and upward short, and can bring in this upper part the letters INRI, which stands for Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. An image of Jesus is fixed to the cross, showing the nails in his hands and feet and a wound in his left side, with reference to stories of passion.
The crucifix is usually hung on the walls (houses and religious buildings, sometimes in front for the latter). Some small crucifix (a few centimeters in height) can rest on a support. One hangs a crucifix traditionally blessed branch. Crucifixes in churches are sometimes surrounded by figures of the Virgin Mary , the apostle John and Mary Magdalene , present at Golgotha. When the characters are of a certain size, it is referred to Calvary as crucifixes.
