Courage International

Courage International is an apostolic work and ministry of the Catholic Church , which cares for people "attracted to same-sex" History

Terence Cooke , cardinal-archbishop of New York designed this apostolic work as a spiritual support to help Catholics with an attraction to the same sex to adhere to directives from the Vatican on sexual behavior.

Cooke invited the moral theologian Father John Harvey, an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, to come to New York to undertake this work with Courage Father Benedict Groeschel, a Franciscan. The first meeting took place in September 1980. In France, a group was formed in September 2010 under the name Homo Catho-Courage.

Purpose

The five goals of Courage are:

  • Live chastity in keeping with the teaching of the Catholic Church on homosexuality.
  • Dedicate his life to Christ through the service of others, spiritual reading, prayer, meditation, spiritual direction of a proprietorship, a frequent reception of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Penance.
  • Encourage a spirit of camaraderie in which all can share their thoughts and experiences, so that no one would not brave the problems associated with homosexuality.
  • Be aware that chaste friendships are not only possible but necessary for a Christian living chastity and that such ties allow real mutual encouragement.
  • Living a life that would be a good example for others.
