The Council of Churches of the Middle East (MECC) (in English : Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), in Arabic : ) is a gathering of Churches of the Middle East. It is also the regional branch of the World Council of Churches.

Member churches belonging to almost all Christian traditions, including Eastern Orthodox , Orthodox , Roman Catholic (Latin and Oriental ), Anglican and Protestant.

  • The 1930 Foundation of the Christian Council of the Middle East by Protestant communities.
  • 1961 Accession of the Syrian Orthodox Church. The council was renamed Council of Churches Middle East.
  • 1974 Accession of several Orthodox churches. The council was renamed Council of Churches of the Middle East.
  • 1990 Membership of the Catholic Churches.

No admission of the Assyrian Apostolic Church of the East

All Christian traditions are represented in the MECC, except the two churches councils from the former Church of Persia.

The Assyrian Apostolic Church of the East made a first application to join the MECC in 1985 by recalling its eastern anchor ), the proposed admission of the Assyrian Apostolic Church of the East the group of Catholic Churches (adherent since 1990) is not successful either, mainly because of the hostility of the Coptic Orthodox Church .
