The Coptic Orthodox Church is an Orthodox Church Eastern autocephalous. It belongs to all churches of the three councils (or Eastern Orthodox). His head bears the title "Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark Preaching and throughout Africa, with residence in Cairo (incumbent: Shenouda III since November 14, 1971).
The title of Patriarch of Alexandria is now also carried by two other church leaders. The Church professes miaphysisme , it should not be confused with the monophysitism : it does not recognize the Council of Chalcedon on grounds of dogma, canonical and policies.
It has until 1959 included the Ethiopian Orthodox Church , which obtained its own patriarch at that time.
