History
The first Franciscans to come in Muscovy was an Italian named Giovanni Plano Carpini (in French Jean de Plan Carpin ) in 1245, former companion of St. Francis of Assisi , who was among provincial Saxons. He had founded a convent in Riga in 1238 and was sent by Pope Innocent IV to convert the Khan of the Golden Horde. He returned to make his report to Lyon in 1247.
