Clement Of Rome
Clement of Rome Clement of Rome (in Latin is a character of early Christianity after the Hellenistic Judaism. It is considered by tradition Roman Catholic as the 4th Bishop of Rome Historicity I. Clement was the fourth pope , according to the list of Irenaeus written in 180 , from 88 to 97 according to the chronology of Eusebius of Caesarea in the fourth century. Irenaeus of Lyons said he had seen the blessed apostles and conversed with them , and Origen and Jerome Stridon have been a disciple of Clement of Paul of Tarsus said the Epistle to the Philippians . Rather, it is a prepaid T. Flavius Clemens , who was consul at the same time as his cousin, the emperor Domitian. I. Clement has also been likened by some authors of the early years of Christianity to the consul Flavius Clemens , who was murdered by Domitian but this identification is no more convincing, even if the performance because of Jewish customs, the consul was able to influence stories of the martyrdom of Clement. The text of the Christian CenturyII The Shepherd of Hermas Clement, who evokes a function was to maintain contact between different communities, he was probably actually added this feature to assign the letter to the community of Corinth. The Tradition assigns him since the second century an anonymous letter - known as the Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians - addressed to Rome around 95 to the Christian community of Corinth, beset by serious internal disturbances while younger members had rebelled against the presbyters , to the point of depositing their loads. The author then suggests their role in the restoration of legitimate pastors and called the rebels to obedience to them. This text may reflect the hierarchical structure of the Christian community whose government still seems like college at that time. This letter will be read by the traditional Roman Catholic as an initial document for the supremacy of the bishop of Rome , although the Christian community in Rome is part of a collective leadership at least until the early third century . This letter written in Greek and in a simple and clear, is a true statement about faith as it was lived in the late first century. This is one of the oldest theological texts of Christianity, with the exception of course some Gospels. The author cites the Scriptures in the Septuagint and is one of the quotes or free loans to Euripides and Sophocles as well as elements of Stoic thought. Forgotten from the fourth century, this letter is found in the seventeenth century the Codex Alexandrinus. In 1894 , a Benedictine located Belgian Namur a manuscript of the eleventh century, containing the popular Latin translation of the letter of Clement, translation back to the Second or third century , nearly contemporary with his writing. The relationship of the text with the Epistle to the Hebrews is clear and the question arises whether the two texts are from the same source. There is a second epistle of Clement to the Corinthians, which dates from about 150 and more like a homily than a letter and can not be attributed to Clement. Adolph von Harnack believed he could identify with letter of Bishop Soter , addressed to 170 in the church of Corinth. Features in common with The Shepherd of Hermas also suggests a Roman origin. Was wrongly attributed to Clement of other works: The Clementine Homilies, the Romance of Recognitions, and two letters on virginity, cited by Jerome Stridon but unknown to Eusebius of Caesarea , which seem to date from the fourth century. Clement is very revered in Eastern European countries because of a tradition that makes him die in exile on the shores of the Euxine in the current Inkerman which is now in Crimea ( Ukraine ). Because of the tradition of the presence of his relics at one end of the road Varangians to the Greeks, the first church built of wood in Scandinavia would have been dedicated. According to tradition, Clement was martyred, but the Acts of his martyrdom, written in the fourth century have a legendary character. Clement is the patron saint of sailors for having been martyred under the Emperor Trajan to 99 , rushed to a seabed anchor marine hung around his neck. His relics were brought to Rome by Crimean Saints Cyril and Methodius in the ninth century. They are venerated in the Basilica San Clemente , near the Coliseum , a building whose legend it was erected at the site of the house of the saint in Rome. His name is mentioned with those of his predecessors Lin and Cletus in the regular traditional Catholic mass. It is celebrated on November 23 by the Roman Catholics and Anglicans. Churches Syriac Orthodox , Syro-Malankara Orthodox , Greek Orthodox , Syriac Catholic and Eastern Catholic celebrate the November 24 , the Russian Orthodox Church on November 25 and the Coptic Orthodox Church on December 8.
